CASA MEDITERRÁNEO OPENS THE OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE FIRST EDITION OF THE ‘INTERNATIONAL PRICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM’
- A prize worth 18,000 euros, it recognizes the informative work on spreading environmental values and the protection of Mediterranean environment
- The deadline of work presentation finishes the next 7 May and the presidency of the Jury will be in charge of the Spanish ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperatio
Casa Mediterráneo has opened today, Thursday 8 April, the official announcement for the first edition of the International Prize of Environmental Journalism Casa Mediterráneo, a prize by which this Institution wants to recognize in public the efforts of the information professionals on the spreading of Mediterranean environmental values and social awareness about the need to preserve them, as well as making progresses towards the region sustainability.
The prize, worth 18,000 euros, is endorsed by the Asociación de Periodistas de Información Ambiental, APIA (Association of Environmental Information Journalists) and the Asociación Española de Comunicación Científica AECC (Spanish Association of Scientific Communication). At international scale, this official announcement is opened to the participation of physical persons in every journalistic genre, published or broadcasted during 2009 in printed, digitalized or audiovisual medias from any worldwide country, though those presented in other languages different of Spanish, French and English must enclose a translation in one of these three languages.
The work subject must be focused on the description of ecologic values at the Mediterranean basin, its environmental problems or initiatives adopted to resolve them, and the progresses on the sustainable tourism of the region.
Moreover, the Jury could award even four honorable mentions, with the amount of one thousand euros for each one.
The Jury, presided by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, will be represented by personalities with renowned prestige in the environmental and journalism field. The Jury decision will be published in May 2010 and the prize will be given during an event celebrated at the municipality of Benidorm, head office of the department Environment and Sustainable Tourism of Casa Mediterráneo, the 4 June 2010, one day before the celebration of the World Environment Day.
The Jury will value the experience of the candidates in the work of spreading environmental and ecologic values in general, the Mediterranean basin in particular, the journalistic quality of the works, its ability of transmitting messages that promote knowledge and awareness about the environmental problems, the originality of the subject, its approach and impact.
As guidance, special attention to the following thematic areas: the lack of water resources and desertification, fight against climate change, natural risks prevention, waste management and preservation and protection of Mediterranean biodiversity.
The deadline for the work presentation will finish the next 7 May, at 14.00h.

CASA MEDITERRÁNEO
Concept.
Casa Mediterráneo is a public consortium created in 2009 and promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MAEC), in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana and the town councils of Alicante, Benidorm and Xàbia, municipalities that house its head offices.
It is the sixth house of the group of “Casas” of MAEC, which currently is composed by: Casa América, Casa Asia, Casa África, Casa Árabe, Casa Sefarad-Israel and Casa Mediterráneo. This group of “Casas” wants to promote the international relations among the regions, areas or geopolitical realities of interest for the foreign policy and of Spanish cooperation, whose purpose is to bring nearer the Spanish citizenship to the knowledge of other realities and participate in activities such as exchange, cooperation and joint action.
Objectives.
Specifically, the principal aim of Casa Mediterráneo is to promote the relations of Spain in the Mediterranean area by public diplomacy, a concept that gives prominence the citizenship to improve the bonds and relations of confidence and friendship among the Mediterranean countries.
Its vocation is to create a place of meeting, for reflection, a space for creating and acting as an instrument for the spreading of the many and plural cultures and traditions of the Mediterranean people.
Casa Mediterráneo expects to become an instrument efficient and necessary to promote the political, economic, social, educative, scientific, cultural and human approaches among the different societies, cultures and people the two shores hold. It expects to be a multidisciplinar and open space in order to build a future of peace, stability and shared progress, by actions that promote meeting, cooperation and solidarity. Its aim is to develop the relations among countries to improve living conditions, the shared approach for common problems and the mutual knowledge among its people.
General objectives.
-To contribute the development of the objectives of the Alliance of Civilizations, promoted by the United Nations, making easier the dialogue and exchange among countries, cultures and people.
-To offer a forum or agora for the meeting and exchange among institutions, organizations, platforms and networks in the Mediterranean political, economic, social or cultural fields.
-To promote cultural, scientific and academic activities that improve the mutual knowledge among both shores societies, by developing relations among the different social agents with influence in the Mediterranean.
-To promote programmes of awareness and spreading of the reality and plurality of the Mediterranean cultures in collaboration with the medias. Pay special attention to the creation of resources and instruments by making the most of new technologies of information and spreading in network.
-To develop pedagogical and educative programmes for children and young people paying special attention to the promotion of values such as cooperation, solidarity, tolerance and mutual respect.
-To spread the richness of cultural and social diversity in the Mediterranean. To stablish a Mediterranean Center of Interpretation about Mediterranean cultures.
Location.
Casa Mediterráneo has its principal head office at Alicante town (Spain) and other head offices at the municipalities Benidorm and Xàbia, at Alicante.
Departments.
Casa Mediterráneo is structured in four areas or departments to achieve its purposes. Governance and Cooperation; Culture, Heritage and Education; Environment and Sustainable Tourism; Society and Economy.
